Who will win the F1 Austrian GP 2026 prediction Kenya
Mambo! The F1 circus heads to the stunning Red Bull Ring in Spielberg for Round 8 of the 2026 season, and this race is shaping up to be a thriller. After seven rounds, we've seen Mercedes dominate the opening stretch of the year, but Ferrari have just announced themselves as genuine title contenders. Cheki what's at stake this weekend.
Mercedes Still in Control, But Ferrari Are Coming
Kimi Antonelli leads the drivers' standings for Mercedes, but his advantage has been slashed dramatically. Hamilton is now 41 points behind with 15 races of what stands as a 22-race campaign still to go after Lewis Hamilton secured a magnificent maiden Grand Prix victory for Ferrari in Barcelona to bring Mercedes' 2026 winning streak to an end.
That Barcelona win was massive. A strategic masterclass gave Lewis Hamilton his maiden victory for Ferrari at the Barcelona Grand Prix while Formula 1 championship leader Kimi Antonelli retired late on. The 41-year-old showed he's far from finished, and Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said of his former driver: "I've seen it many years where suddenly the Lewis Hamilton train started to go and then it's very difficult to stop it."
Lewis Hamilton's triumph, his maiden Grand Prix win for Ferrari, has strengthened his hold on second place in the Drivers' Championship. His deficit to leader Kimi Antonelli has also been slashed from 66 points to 41 following Antonelli's retirement from the race. George Russell sits third, keeping Mercedes firmly in the hunt for both championships.
The Red Bull Ring: Fast, Fierce and Unforgiving
At just 2.7 miles (4.318km), the Spielberg venue regularly produces the quickest lap times of the season, with drivers spending little more than a minute to complete a lap. This compact layout means every tenth of a second counts, and mistakes are punished immediately.
The track's compact nature means only seven require significant braking, creating a flowing rhythm that places a premium on traction, straight-line speed and precision. There's overtaking aplenty in Turns 3 and 4, and then the flow through the second half of the lap is really good. It's one of the fastest on the calendar, which means we should see plenty of action throughout the race.
Winners from the current grid are Valtteri Bottas (2017 and 2020), Lewis Hamilton (2016), Charles Leclerc (2022), George Russell (2024) and Lando Norris (2025). But the king of this circuit? Max Verstappen won at the Red Bull Ring in 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2023. With four wins, he stands alone as the most successful driver in Austrian Grand Prix history.
Can Max Verstappen Bounce Back at Home?
Red Bull's 2026 season has been a struggle. Red Bull Racing is navigating an uncharacteristic struggle in the 2026 campaign. A winless start to the 2026 season has seen Red Bull slip to fourth in the Constructors' Championship through the opening third of the year. But this weekend could be different.
Four-time world champion Verstappen said: "We have a new package we are bringing, so it is exciting to see how much this could look to give us in lap time". Red Bull is bringing its biggest 2026 upgrade package yet to its home circuit. The changes include floor revisions, sidepod updates, front-wing refinements and significant weight savings. The team has finally hit the minimum weight target, delivering an immediate performance gain.
Verstappen's record at this track is remarkable. Verstappen is also the driver with the highest number of pole positions (four) and the most podium finishes (six) at the Austrian Grand Prix. If those upgrades work, expect the Dutchman to be right in the mix on Sunday.
McLaren and the Midfield Battle
Lando Norris is the reigning World Drivers' Champion, while McLaren-Mercedes are the reigning World Constructors' Champions, but 2026 has been a tougher challenge. Lando Norris won the 2025 Austrian GP for McLaren. Norris stormed to pole position with a blistering lap and finished 0.521 seconds ahead of Leclerc. The Brit then drove a convincing drive to win Sunday's race.
Norris and teammate Oscar Piastri know this circuit well and will be looking to capitalize on any slip-ups from the front runners. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc also needs a strong result after back-to-back retirements for Hamilton's team-mate Charles Leclerc have opened a 30-point gap between the Ferrari pair.
The 2026 Grid and Key Contenders
The 2026 season features major changes. George Russell and Kimi Antonelli drive for Mercedes. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton drive for Ferrari. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri drive for McLaren. Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar drive for Red Bull Racing. Cadillac are making their debut in the championship using Ferrari power units, marking the first time an eleventh team has competed since 2016.
Fresh from his first world title win in 2025, Norris will no doubt be hungry for more. But it was younger challenger Piastri who led the championship for most of the season before Norris clinched it late. Both McLaren drivers will be motivated to get back on top.
What the Odds and Experts Say
As of June 24, 2026, major bookmakers have Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) at 2/1 to 7/4 (clear favourite on the back of his championship lead), George Russell (Mercedes) at 7/2 to 3/1, Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) at 9/2 to 4/1, Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) at 7/1 to 13/2, and Max Verstappen (Red Bull) at 12/1 to 17/2. Verstappen's odds have improved thanks to the home upgrades and his strong historical record at the track.
Prediction: Hamilton and Antonelli fight for victory, with Norris close enough to make strategy uncomfortable, according to expert analysis. But wazi, this is F1 in 2026, and anything can happen on race day.
Circuit Challenges and Strategy
Altitude also plays an important role in Austria. Situated more than 600 metres above sea level, the thinner air reduces aerodynamic downforce compared to many other venues on the calendar. That can increase tyre slip through both corner entry and exit. Teams will need to manage thermal degradation carefully.
Pirelli will bring the softest compounds in the range: C3, C4 and C5. Wear is not a decisive factor in Austria, where degradation is mainly thermal in origin. Expect teams to go aggressive on strategy, and don't be surprised if we see some bold calls that shake up the order.
Who Will Stand on Top of the Podium?
This market is wide open. Mercedes have the machinery and the momentum in the championship, but Hamilton has broken their winning streak and Ferrari are now a genuine threat. Verstappen could surprise everyone with Red Bull's upgrades at his home race, and McLaren's defending champions won't go quietly.
